How to Audit Your Lead Journey From Click to Customer
A practical walkthrough you can run yourself, in an afternoon, without buying anything.
You do not need a consultant to find the biggest problem in your marketing system. You need one afternoon, access to your own accounts, and a willingness to follow a lead the whole way through instead of looking at a summary of it.
Step 1: Become your own lead
Search for your service the way a customer would. Click your own ad. Load the landing page on a phone, on a normal connection. Fill out the form with a real address you control.
Then wait, and record exactly what happens: what confirmation you receive, how long until a human contacts you, and through which channel.
Step 2: Follow the record
Find your own submission in the CRM. Check whether the source, campaign and page are attached to it, whether an owner was assigned, and whether the fields the sales team relies on are actually populated.
A submission that arrives without source data is a lead you can never evaluate. That alone is often the finding.
Step 3: Check the measurement layer
Confirm the conversion registered in GA4 and in the ad platform, and that both are counting the same event. Duplicate or double-counted conversions distort every optimization decision that follows.
- Is the conversion defined as a qualified action or any form fill?
- Do UTMs survive from ad to page to CRM?
- Are test submissions excluded from reporting?
Step 4: Sample ten real leads
Take ten inquiries from last month and trace each one. Note the time to first contact, the number of attempts, and the outcome. Ten is enough to see a pattern and small enough to actually finish.
Step 5: Write down one sentence
Finish with a single sentence naming the narrowest point in the journey and what it is costing. If you can write that sentence honestly, you have a marketing priority for the next quarter — and it is often not the channel you assumed.
